Distinguished Teacher Certificate awarded by the International Liszt Ferenc Competition (Hungary Budapest) 2024
My musical journey has brought me from Hong Kong to London and Munich. Having graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ Junior Music Programme, I obtained the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from the Hong Kong Baptist University (First Class Honours), majoring in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. I was recipient of the Lui Ming Fong Memorial Scholarship and was on the President’s Honour Roll several times. For my graduate studies I obtained a scholarship for my King’s College London Master of Arts Degree. I am a Licentiate of Trinity College London in Piano Recital (Distinction), having studied with Prof. Li Ming Qiang, juror of the International Chopin Piano Competition and former Deputy Director of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, renowned pianist Eva Lue (Royal College of Music, London) and Mr. Ma Cong. I have also performed in piano masterclasses by Prof. Yang Ming at the Central Conservatory of Beijing, Dr. Timothy Woolsey (Texas State University) and Dr. Gloria Chuang (Winona State University) and conducting masterclass by Prof. Wolfgang Mastnak (The University of Music and Performing Arts Munich). Recently attended the Professional Diploma of Early Childhood Music Education at the Hong Kong Baptist University.
Performing Experience
I performed as collaborative pianist at Gasteig Cultural Center (Carl-Orff Saal), Einstein Kultur and Jazzclub Unterfahrt in Munich, Alter Speicher Ebersberg in Bavaria, also at Hong Kong City Hall and Hong Kong Cultural Center as piano soloist. In Germany, I joined the music therapy project SMILE (Singing Music In the Language English), working with Prof. Wolfgang Mastnak of The University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and performed at Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich’s Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, the German Heart Centre and various hospitals in Munich.
Piano Lessons and Pedagogy
Throughout my 15 years of piano teaching career in Germany and Hong Kong, I have helped piano students of all ages to deepen their understandings in music and conducted piano exams preparations when necessary. During my years as a performing pianist in Germany, I taught children and adults in the Munich Piano School (Klavierschule München). Upon my return to Hong Kong, I worked at the English Schools Foundation and was a music class teacher at Victoria Belcher International Kindergarten. My music pedagogic work includes publishing the article “How Art and Music Can Contribute to a Child’s Mental and Emotional Wellbeing” on Whizpa, an online parental platform.
Besides always encouraging my piano students to progress in an organic way, whether children or adults, I am also familiar with the piano exams curricula of The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity College London. For those who chose to go through ABRSM piano gradings, they have achieved excellent results and my piano students have been awarded Silver Award in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival piano Graded and advanced categories (post-Grade 8). My piano students range from beginners to advanced piano diploma level (ATCL). My piano pedagogic approaches are of the classical German and Russian schools. For piano beginners, I would introduce them to the methods of Bastien, Alfred, John Thompson, Bach, Czerny, Burgmuller, Hanon, Anne Terzibaschitsch (in German); and an extensive repertoire of Classical and Contemporary music for piano diploma level students. I believe that ‘tailor-making’ individual piano lesson plans is the best way to suit piano students from beginners to advanced levels, of all ages.
I encourage my piano students to take initiatives in learning, and have strong expressions and convictions in their piano playing. Children and adults are inspired to develop an acute sense of musical awareness, individual characters, excellent aural skills, and broad knowledge in music theory and history. I have experience in teaching piano to children from three years old to adults who would like to learn classical and contemporary piano music.
Piano and music theory lessons for children and adults can be conducted in English, Chinese, French or German. Private home piano lessons are upon requests.
